It was a perfect excuse. I can hardly ever get husband to go out for wings, but when a dear friend asked him to drive a van full of friends to a birthday meal, I knew he couldn't refuse. So on a Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago we loaded up our 9-seater Suburban with my husband as the chauffeur and the birthday boy, his wife, and friends filling up the rest of the truck and we headed down to Quaker Steak & Lube or "The Lube", which is located on the Carlisle Pike in Mechanicsburg, PA.
We walked into the restaurant about 2:00 PM and the establishment was packed. Not wanting to wait in the lobby, we were ushered into the ample sized bar area where we proceeded to order some pre-dinner beverages.
I was pleasantly surprised by the ample craft beer selections and ordered a cold Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Creative mixed drinks such as "Lube-a-Ritas" and other concoctions are also available. But make no mistake, the feature drink of Quaker Steak & Lube is the "Lube Tube", a four foot plexiglass tube that is filled to the top with beer, and once seated, we ordered two of these chilly pillars.
The Lube Tubes are kept cold with an ice pack that floats inside and there is easy access with the tap which sits at the bottom of the tube making for fun and easy dispensing of beverages.
The mildest are ranch, or BBQ, with a Scoville rating of 90. The highest is "Triple Atomic" listed as "Guts, Glory, Pain" with a Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) of 500,000. If you have any question about how hot that is, the typical Habanero pepper rates from 100,000 to 350,000 SHU. Needless to say, I heard, that a signed release is necessary before trying the Triple Atomics. You get a free T-shirt too, but that was definitely not enough for any of us to dare try this formidable challenge.
For an appetizer, I had decided upon the Backfire Boom Boom Shrimp.
My husband had a buffalo chicken salad with pita bread which was excellent. But the centerpiece of the menu are the wings. There are many unique choices, such as Thai, Asian Sesame, Parmesean Pepper to name a few. I had the dusted hot mango wings which are rated at 2550 SHU. I was being extra cautious after reading about the Triple Atomics and upon tasting, actually the dusted mango hot wings were actually a little mild for my taste (For an objective reference of hotness, Sriracha sauce is about 2500 SHU).
The wings were very well cooked and seasoned and you can get them with a side of the classic celery and blue cheese. Although there are a myriad of creative flavors, the consensus was, that the Classic Buffalo, coming in at 3000 SHU were the best as far as taste and balance of hotness.
Quaker Steak & Lube is not the most unique or gourmet restaurant I have ever eaten at, but with colorful decorations, good food and drink selections, if you are looking for a fun night out with friends and family, it is definitely solid "state" choice!
