Located at 388 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, The Backyard is a restaurant/bar that is said to have been opened by a local Park Slope family without a backyard in order to ensure everyone in the neighborhood had a backyard to hang out in. And judging by the stellar reviews the establishment gets in regards to their food (particularly their Lobster Sliders), staff, atmosphere and of course, their back yard, they obviously have succeeded in their quest to provide their patrons a relaxing and comfortable environment to retreat to.
The centerpiece of the event itself are the four distinct hot sauces created Tim Kavarnos, the creator of and force behind the Salamander Sauce Company.
He adds in regards to his philosophy, "I've found that in the majority of hot sauces the fire overwhelms the flavor."
It is that same philosophy that actually led to the naming of his sauce company; "It has become my goal to create sauces where the flavors, like the mythical salamander, dance through the fire without being consumed."
Keeping in step with that philosophy, Kavarnos has created four distinctively different sauces that will appeal to a variety of hot sauce lovers. The foundation of his line is his Original Hot Sauce. It combines red bell pepper, habanero and jalapeno with carrot, garlic, ginger and cilantro; resulting in a sauce that is smoky and intense, but also, herbaceous. He likes to say, "Our Original sauce brings extra fire to any food, but never burns."
With the company's Strawberry Hot Sauce, the essence of ripe strawberries subtlety make their presence known, but give way to fiery habaneros that bite like no berry ever could. Within moments, the cool, refreshing taste of fresh orange lingers upon your tongue as the burst of heat subsides.
The newest sauce in Salamanders line-up is their Whiskey Hot Sauce, best described in the product's description: "Sultry and smooth, dark and alluring; one touch to your lips and you'll know what we mean. Also, as a new addition to the event, BKBJ will be making a special Beef Jerky using Salamander's Whiskey Sauce and they will be bringing along samples.
