The Texas native had been working in Houston for several years before acknowledging that she was unhappy in her job.
“The economy was tanking and I had been running scared for a few years, every day fearing that I would be let go in the next round,” she recalls. “Then one day I heard that more lay- offs were in the works, and I had the surprising realization that I hoped it would be me. That's when I knew something had to change.”
Two years later and the couple is still in Madrid. There are, however, some noticeable changes. The pair is now married and their first child was born in February.
But those aren't the only changes for the new mom. Pregnancy cravings coupled with her love of food led Kersch to the kitchen, where she spent hours trying to recreate tastes from home and experimenting with Spanish flavors. This experience gave rise to Kersch's food blog, GambasandGrits.com (“gambas” being “shrimp” in Spanish), as well as the Gourmand's Grater.

“Now that we are starting to feed Hugo solids, I totally get the appeal of a portable food mill.”
The retro-style grater is to be made from stainless steel with porcelain enamel coating, but when Kersch began researching manufacturers, she hit a wall.
“I really thought it would be easier to get it made, but if you're not Kitchen Aid, reputable manufacturers aren't interested.”
Realizing that she could not commit half-way to her dream project, Kersch decided to take it to crowdfunding platform.
“I figure, if I can raise my goal of $30,000, there is enough of an interest by the masses, of foodies at least, for the grater, and I will commit to getting it made,” Kersch says.
The Gourmand's Grater crowdfunding campaign will kick off on August 16th on the website Indiegogo.com (or just click on the ad at right).
In addition to the Gourmand's Grater, Kersch is offering a variety of thank-you gifts, including a gourmand's “blow-out” dream vacation to Madrid with airfare, accommodations, all meals, a tapas-hopping tour, winery tour, and multiple tastings of Spanish delicacies.
